Terrace Ampitheater Woodblock Print, March 2020

Terrace Ampitheater

Dylan, Evan, and friends took me along for a river trip in 2019. At one of our camps, we hiked up a canyon bottom until I was particularly halted by the shape of the wash as it dropped through layers of the stone. A trickle of water from the pools above spilled into a wide, flat basin, hugged on all sides but downwash by a small rim of stone. In the bottom of the circular basin, the water drained across the plaza, wandering from bowl to bowl by thin veins gently carved into the stone, all favoring the same parallel cracks from the stone’s fracturing below. It looked like a dance floor. Original study in Pocketbook 4.

I designed this print in November 2019, but wasn’t able to begin carving and printing until March 2020.
